AK vs AK Plot
AK vs AK is a comedy thriller where two famous personalities of Bollywood industry- Anurag Kashyap & Anil Kapoor faces each other. Anil Kapoor who had once ruled the film industry now searching for a chance to play Hero in a film so he approaches to Anurag Kashyap for a role. Anurag says that his time in the industry as a hero is over as he’s too aged. He don’t have a hero face or can dance like one anymore. Same response came from Anil Kapoor who said that Anurag’s films are trash . They don’t deserve big screen as they are dark & abusive.
Then in a talk show they were ask who’s more important- a director or an actor. Who draws the audience to the theatres? This also rage a on-stage conflict between the two; two egoistic proving who of them is better. So Anurag planned a movie where Anil Kapoor’s daughter, Sonam Kapoor is kidnapped & he will have to find her till sunrise. The search will be filmed in real-time. Everything in this movie will be real. Every drop of blood, sweat, expressions, pain all will be real. And that no outsiders or police can be involved else it will be bad for Sonam.
AK vs AK Review
This is a very different kind of movie from Vikramaditya Motwane. This film is a mockumentary just like The Office US but the definition of satire in this film got too dark after the first half. Too dark. From the very first scene the story began on a fun comedy note. Anurag, a crazy director who arranged this entire plan and his cameraman who will be shooting everything. And according to him, it will be the most realistic thriller that industry have ever seen.
This movie provides a fresh perspective of thriller. If you are tired of the usual thrillers that are coming everyday on OTT platforms then this movie can be a good refreshment. But obviously you can’t leave this movie after watching first few minutes thinking that story makes no sense. You will have occasional laughters as you start how these two middle-aged personalities insulting each other. But wait till the silliness descends into more suspense filled plot.
At one point it feels like there’s a game inside a game. More like 2018 film, ‘Game Night’. But its hard to understand which is real & which is scripted. And this is where this film throve in its thriller genre.
Ak vs AK – Acting:
This film takes you behind the beautiful Bolly life & gives you an idea of the mess tha lies beneath it. Or atleast it tries so. Both of the AKs played themselves in an impressive way and it makes you belief- Is there really a conflict between Kashyap & Kapoor? I even checked Twitter & Google trust me. Anil Kapoor’s act was simply ‘Jhakaas.’ He truly got an opportunity to show his acting skills & he nailed it. From helplessness to fear, to anger- the expressions were on point. Anurag didn’t get to show his acting skills much because that’s how the story is written maybe.
The supporting roles were Sonam Kapoor, Harshvardhan Kapoor, Bonny Kapoor; basically Anil Kapoor’s entire family. And the story also turns in that way. Few references of Nawazuddin Siddiqui & Tapsee Pannu from Anurag’s side made this story quite believable & confusing also in a fun way. Its like everybody is being recorded in real time.
Yogita Bihani played the cameraman pf this mockumentary. Her character name was also Yogita & she appeared on screen for a very small span of time; in few beginning scenes & at the end.
Ak vs AK – Technical Aspects:
Vikramaditya Motwane’s work in this film like all hois others is worth appreciating. I found no loophole in the setting of this story. The way the leads where in the same dress throughout the film & very realistic appearance that made the point- “Iss film mein koi make-up nahi rahega. Hero royega to asli. Hero hasega to asli. Lekin haasi nahi ayegi” as Anurag said.
The appropriate music also made the scenes more impactful. But I think since this film has documentary style storytelling then what if there was no music. What if it had music only in the extreme stages of the story. The film actually have lot of cinematic thriller music once the main part of the story starts, like any other feature film. There is a fun rap at the end which seemed just fine.
Ak vs AK – Verdict:
This is an experimental film, one of its kind that is very uniquely presented. It also gave a new experience to sophisticated viewers. This film is indeed a crazy one so don’t start to throw your judgement at it. Wait till it starts to make you a part of its journey. This film feels so real because we know both of them for a long time & the fact is they played their own selves in AK vs AK. In one word this is a must-watch.
