Godzilla vs Kong Review
Godzilla vs Kong is the fourth film in Legendary’s MonsterVerse & sequel to both Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) and Kong: Skull Island (2017). This is a movie that might be a dream come true for many people who are familiar with the MonsterVerse or have seen King Kong vs Godzilla (1962). Warner Bros. delivered the second biggest blockbuster of this year after the most-awaited Zack Snyder’s Justice League. ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ earned $48 million at the US box office over the weekend, in its first five days of release, the best domestic opening after the pandemic. It was obviously a great experience to see it from the comfort of home when you can’t visit the theatres like before. Although seeing the two massive titans of Hollywood fight each other is surely a treat to our eyes but is it what it promises to be (storywise)?
This is definitely an IMAX must-watch film that is perfect if you don’t care about the plot but only the stunning visuals. It is because story-wise it could have been better. To make a 2 hr movie of two monsters fighting is definitely not an easy job especially when it’s 2021 & the audiences are much wiser than in 1962. In the 90s, Godzilla causing havoc rampage & King Kong saving the day was more than a perfect plot but times are not the same, is it? Even then this movie has a lot of weaknesses in its story.
The movie took a lot of time to develop a story that led to the only exciting thing of the movie, the battle between the two monsters. The story introduced a new concept of “Hollow Earth” that is, a part inside the Earth where these titans can exist which I didn’t find much believable from their world perspective. Like it was easier to believe a “Skull Island” or even a giant lizard staying under the sea. But I found the plot of “Hollow Earth” exploration although visually stunning like “Avatar’s Pandora”, but boring. It felt like I have accepted my fate & so I’ll watch whatever they gonna feed me, without complaint.
There were many characters that felt quite unnecessary like Madison Russell (Millie Bobby Brown), Josh Valentine (Julian Dennison) & Mark Russell (Kyle Chandler) who were there just to represent the previous installments of the MonsterVerse. After watching this film I think the standalone films of the giant ape & lizard was very interesting & quite-believable but when these two came together, the result- Not meetING my expectation. “Godzilla vs Kong review”
The only beautiful part of this film whom you actually want to be alive & healthy is Jia (Kaylee Hottle) who played a deaf, tribal girl who can communicate with Kong through sign language. She was the cutest human being in this film & I actually liked her presence. Apart from her, I didn’t care about any other characters at all, I don’t know why. The other exciting moments were obviously when the two titans met, the first fight in the sea & the second battle in the glorious city of Hong Kong. Destroying a stunning city with beautiful neon lights that are reflecting on their skin.
The fights were too long but the only engageable & splendid moments of the film. Needless to say but I’ll mention anyway the details of their skin were phenomenal. The Godzilla actually looked more real than the ape.
SPOILER ALERT: There is more than one Godzilla in this film.
This film is solely a visual treat from WB to us. So watch it & admire the works of the filmmakers. No matter how massive this film is, it is not rewatchable, at least for me. I was bored for the most part of the film & I didn’t like the flow of the story, not because it was slow but it was ‘not engaging’. The characters were played by renowned actors like Alexander Skarsgard, Rebecca Hall & Millie Bobby Brown yet, they didn’t connect well with the audiences so their effort to bring peace within the two monsters went unnoticeable to me.
Godzilla vs Kong is available for streaming on HBO Max.
