Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story REVIEW
Although the presentation of this show looks a bit of “The Wolf of Wall Street” types but this is not some made up or reshaped, glamorous Bollywood story. Instead it tells the real history behind the biggest scam of India, a scam of 500 crores that shook the economy. All the information shared through this story are real which makes it a Must Watch. Nothing feels made up in this brilliantly recreated 90’s Bombay story. One of the best thing is although its about Harshad Mehta, he is never portrayed as some glorious hero of the story. He was just like the rest of the important characters. Even if you don’t know anything of stock market, this show has explained everything in such a simple way that you will understand A-Z of stock market, if watched without distraction.
The cinematography of Scam 1992 is worth of appreciation. The way they recreated the 90s retro look on the screen to describe the period might have given a new identity to Indian cinema. Pratik Gandhi who played Harshad Mehta is 2020’s best male performance in webseries for me. Not that his acting was very extraordinary or something like that but the fact that he played the character so effortlessly that it was satisfying to appreciate the character. From him saying “Risk Hai To Ishq Hai” to his clever smiles while giving dialogues made this character more vibrant. It felt like Pratik Gandhi brought Harshad Mehta alive after 30 years.
Shreya Dhanwanthary played Sucheta Dalal, a financial journalist was one of the most smartest woman character I’ve seen on Indian webseries for a long time. The way she chase the truth will make you believe in the power of journalism. The way she carries herself in each and every scene, her dialogues, fluency made me hope to see her more in other movies/series. She’s undoubtedly a very powerful actress. There were other powerful performances like Nikhil Dwivedi, Anant Mahadevan, Chirag Vohra, Rajat Kapoor which are worth mentioning. Especially Rajat Kapoor who appears in two consecutive episodes & steals the show as a CBI officer.
Hansal Mehta is the director of this show who has previously given is masterpieces like Aligarh and Citylights. He broke all his previous records with Scam 1992, which can be process as a game changer not only for his direction but for entire Indian cinema. The title song is the grooviest one of 2020, I mean I’ve never tapped my feet so much before on any series’ title track.
In few words it is a smart and clever show that tests your intelligence and also gives you satisfaction of watching perfect, realistic piece of ‘Indian Cinema’.
