Zack Snyder’s Justice League Review
Justice has been served to the DC characters & the fans. I’ve no definite words to explain this massive 4 hrs journey of the superhero flick. It’s spell-bounding, pure art of Zack Snyder. Zack Snyder’s Justice League premiered on 18th March, on HBO Max. DC movies till now were on an uncertain ride that mostly got mixed reviews from critics & fans but with this film, Snyder restored the faith in DCEU. He has poured his heart and soul into making this masterpiece of his dreams, that gave the fans triumphant.
I was overwhelmed after completing this film given the fact I literally grew up a Superman-Batman fanboy. I was really dumbfounded to see a silly & weak Batman & even sillier Superman with a creepy CGI smile in the theatrical cut. But Snyder’s cut gave me a lot more than what I expected. The most awaited movie release of HBO Max, Zack Snyder’s Justice League is just mind-blowing. Unlike what many people doubted, it is a completely different movie. There are some similarities with Justice League (2017) because of the initial shoots of Zack Snyder.
It was very clever of Zack Snyder to divide the movie into six chapters- “Don’t Count On It, Batman,” “The Age Of Heroes,” “Beloved Mother, Beloved Son,” “Change Machine,” “All The King’s Horses,” and “Something Darker”. If you are confident enough to watch the entire film in one sitting then you can do that else, watch it as a series. The last part contains “Epilogue” which will shock & amaze you at the same time. Zack has introduced a new DC superhero (NO SPOILERS) that might be a good start for the future directors who would continue the legacy.
Restoration Of DC Universe
Each & every member of the Justice League got profound character development with this film. Batman, Superman, Flash & Cyborg. Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) & Aquaman (Jason Momoa) got their own movies recently which were successful & that’s good. In Justice League (2017) the audiences deserved the ‘Black Superman’ that they didn’t get. Gladly Zack’s Justice League has a very refreshing Clark Kent brought to life by the league, who’s now the Black Superman we all wanted.
The main reason for such a long duration is that Zack introduced each hero in the story very carefully. The film has a very well constructed story that paved the foundation for Flash & Cyborg, who were the heart of the movie. The previous version merely introduced them. But now in Zack’s version, they are well-developed & integral characters without which the League must have fragmented with the coming of Darkseid. This film explored more of Cyborg (Ray Fisher) & Flash (Ezra Miller) as the most paramount members of Justice League after Batman. A little bit of humor added worked perfectly with Snyder’s dark theme; NO cringe comedy this time.
We got a more confident Batman (Ben Affleck) this time who had tremendous faith in his team. Ben Affleck’s Batman whose DC journey started with a lot of criticism finally, gets the actual leadership quality worthy of leading the Justice League, thanks to Zack Snyder & his vision. The exact comic book Batman that Joss Whedon failed in his version. On top of that, the dialogues are very well written which you will get proof from some of the conversations between Bruce Wayne & Alfred.
Even Villains Of DC Have Their Own Space
I really liked the new Steppenwolf who is more cunning in this version. The story has developed a certain personality to this villain which was absent in the previous version. In the previous Justice League movie, the Steppenwolf was more of a villain without any identity, just in the movie for the purpose of killing the heroes & all. But the new Steppenwolf was more of a guy who would do anything to prove his worth to the superior Darkseid.
The CGI villain was more expressive in Snyder’s version. Even the death of Steppenwolf made me feel sorry for the guy. And we can say that we all have loved & feared the deadly Darkseid, with his red glowing eyes & thick, dreadful voice and a legion of parademons; even a presence deadlier than MCU’s Thanos. This cut has shown a lot of Darkseid & his story that we didn’t expect but we were amazed by it.
The only criticism is that Snyder’s cut is not released in widescreen but 4:3 frame ratio, unlike most films. It was hard for fans to switch to the 4:3 format since the whole world is used to watching movies on a widescreen mode. But by the time the four hours were up, it was not an issue that would bug you. The prime reason behind this ratio is that Zack intentionally filmed the film with this aspect ratio in mind. And this presentation works extremely well on an IMAX screen, and that makes it obvious that Snyder is a ‘visionary director’.
If you were an avid comic book reader as a child then this film is everything you can dream of. With the new film, the Joss Whedon directed film has been totally dusted & is now a distant memory. Zack Snyder with his brilliant writing, direction & visuals has created a perfect comic book film that has paved the way to the future of DCU. The only good thing that WB should do is not let the director’s hard work go in vain & actually proceed to build a more distinguished world with these superheroes. Do you know what’s even better? Hire Zack Snyder & complete the Snyderverse. Who knows if this movie brings profit to WB, maybe they will think about it.
