Army of the Dead Review
This is Zack Snyder‘s version of Suicide Squad punched into the Zombieland world. Guns, blood, fire, & casino glory make up this crazy zombie ride that is a perfect fun watch during the pandemic second wave. Army of the Dead is not your traditional zombie film where it is more an epidemic & people struggle for cure/survival. It is more of a comical world where zombies are smart, fast & actually knows how to fight; oh & did I mention they are quite civilized & have well physique?
The story as shared by Zack Snyder himself in an interview, was written right after Dawn of the Dead was a success. The first thing, to begin with, this film doesn’t follow the genre completely yet it tries to do justice to it in its own way. A zombie concept never explored before where the dead have a kingdom- a ruler, where the ‘undead’ can conceive & many new things.
From the very beginning to the end, the director made sure to keep a glorifying tone to the film no matter what they show. So when you are seeing the bloodfest in Las Vegas, you actually enjoy the scenes. The idea of a heist in the middle of a zombie apocalypse is completely new to this genre that people saw for the first time, even then it has many flaws. But you don’t watch a ‘zombie-slasher’ movie with many expectations; you watch it to simply feel the adrenaline rush. This movie is also similar.
Dave Bautista as Scott Ward was a very interesting & sincere hero for this film & he did his part perfectly. Snyder also gave a good history to his main character. Good thing was that this character was real & he was not invincible. We get to see Huma Qureshi & although she had a small part, we loved her. The others did more or less good according to the story. It was good to see Ella Purnell after a long time. The cast was fresh & the team was good although they lacked a bond among themselves needed to survive the zombie battle.
Verdict
Just like last year’s Netflix release “Extraction”, “Army of the Dead” is a similar high budget release that is solely for entertainment purposes. You don’t expect an image after watching such action films. Although this film does not have any after-watch value still Zack Snyder’s signature cinematography, amazing camera work, beautiful visuals & presentation of the genre film in a new way is sure to give you 2hrs 28 mins of thrill & crazy ride. Don’t forget about the zombie tiger you saw in the trailer!
