His house got an intriguing story that kind of keeps the audience in dark for most part. A social political presentation oh a story that makes you wonder what is the actual horror in here. After they move to their new house things turn supernatural and scary when they start feeling strange presence in their house. It builds a mystery behind why it’s all happening- through illusions and flashbacks.
His House Ending explained
A lot of horrifying things happen in the movie and some parts are really jump scary. Although the horror elements are quite justifying according to the story the ending might be bit confusing for some viewers. Like what’s the explanation behind the monster shown at the end?
As both Rial and Bol are fighting with their part regrets and horror, it confuses is which spirit is real and which is illusion. In the end the witch/demon (I’ll go with witch) is pretty creepy and when shown suddenly can take away the charm of this movies’ authenticity if not understand correctly.
The witch present in the house motioned a knife to Rial that she can get her dead daughter, Naya in exchange of Bol’s flesh, asking for a sacrifice basically. The end climax have this setting that Rial saw the knife on a counter and as she goes to the faucet and turns only to realize that Bol got it deeply gashed into his arm. He said that it’s what the devil wants and that it will come for him now. Sacrificing himself for their daughter for being essentially responsible for Naya’s death. He said he didn’t try enough.
He mentions that he can see all the spirits – they are the victims from the boat. There was some low chanting that indicates that a monster is coming. Suddenly the tile beneath cracks exploding open of which a zombie looking witch emerges right up in Bol’s face with it’s piercing glowing eyes.
Finally Rial was able to let goof Naya’s hand and bidding goodbye to the tribal women that shows that she had finally accepted their past and now want to embrace their presence. She surprises the witch from behind and slices the throat. So that’s how we can kill a witch? Interesting.
The Main Meaning
Anyway this moment is crucial to her character’s journey. She consistently felt out of place even back in Sudan and now in England- where she was going along her husband’s wishes. Hence, proving its her home altogether. The final scene shows Mark and his boys come for another check in and seeing the walls repaired he nods- means the couple seem well. He asked if the witch is still around to which the couple casually said “No”.
They were asked about the rats and ‘the girl’ to which Bol looked away longingly telling that “your ghost follows you and they never leave & they stay with you”. This shows that they have finally faces it and that “this is our house”. It showed their strong commitment to live in the house despite of all the spirits in the walls. The couple wanted to do anything in their power to leave their dangerous country but they obviously crossed a line taking Naya with them. They couldn’t protected her as promised and that guilt haunts them to the very end.
Throughout the movie the couple and especially Bol refuses to what had happened but ultimately it is convinced that they are good people. It is only confronting and accepting own deed that they finally able to move forward in their lives. The last scene symbolizes that the ghosts will always stay with them and never leave them.
