Drishyam 2 Review
I have just watched Drishyam 2 and I must say it is one of the best thrillers of Malayalam. This is the sequel of the 2013 film Drishyam directed by the same director, Jeethu Joseph. Making a sequel of an already outstanding movie needs a lot of responsibility & commitment; even then not many succeed to shine like the prequels. It is super highly rated on IMDB- 8.8/10
When the trailer came out it felt like what can they do more with a story that already revealed its secret to the audience. Guess what, Jeethu Joseph had a bigger climax. This story feels real along with the characters. The first movie, Drishyam (2013) was a well-made story that accelerated the gear in the second half- it held my throat in suspense. While the sequel feels not that strong in terms of ‘suspense’ but the situation is much more realistic this time. And it seems the makers have done a lot of research for this one. Obviously, it’s a story like the previous part but this time the way investigation is carried & especially Georgekutty’s backup to protect his family is mindblowing.
Drishyam 2 story in Brief
The characters have more depth this time. The story starts with how the family is living happily with a pang of deep guilt. They are making themselves happy, trying to cure the wounds. While George’s younger daughter, Anu has now grown up & portrays a playful character his elder one Anju is still recovering. She suffers from PTSD & epilepsy fits, panics when she sees police vehicles, police nearby. And George who still in cable service provider, is trying to make his name in film production & excited to develop his first film. The four with up & downs of daily life manages to stay happy & avoid unnecessary panic. The IPS keeps his investigation precise & on-track. He set two of his officers as George’s neighbor who keeps eye on the family & gathers information to Thomas.
Technical Aspects
The cinematography of this movie is good, better than the early one. The editing & the music works perfectly with the story. In some scenes when Thomas Bastin explains the investigation procedures & also another scene when the old producer explains the climax, I liked how the camera goes at the back & eventually opens new (explaining) scenes with a continuous transition.
Since it’s an intellectual film the audience might doubt particular things but eventually, the story made the ends believable. A backup behind a backup, backed by another backup- this brilliantly written story is an example of that. If you have the slightest doubt about your decision, plan a backup & then back that up as well.
Drishyam 2 runtime is 2hr 25 min which scared me at first. The first half feels too long as the story draws a happy picture of the family. But after the first one hour, the movie takes you on a very exciting ride. Although the movie needed to portray how the family is coping to lead a normal life & for the audience to revisit old faces, I think that could have been done more briefly. I mean there is a scene where Georgekutty & his wife, Rani talks about his film business & that she thinks saving up for Anju’s marriage would be a good option- the scene goes for too long & feels drag. So if the first half was made shorter it would be more exciting.
Performance
The lead cast of Drishyam 2- Mohanlal, Asha Sharath & Morali Gopy did an excellent job. The power each of these actors had in their presence made the drama worthwhile. But if you ask me who deserves praise I’d gladly say Mohanlal, Asha & Morali. Mohanlal was very responsible & precautious about everything happening around his family, that his character demands. The suspicious stares he gives throughout the movie make his character interesting. It feels that a lot is going on in this man’s mind. Morali was very sincere & goal-oriented. It’s like as he said, “it’s a war” & he will win his.
Asha’s acting was also very powerful. While she questions Anju in the police station trying to bring words from her, her expression was constantly strong & furious. But there is something I think her character lacked. After six years she only had vengeance in her. After 6 years the parents are getting their dead son’s remnants retrieval, shouldn’t she be teary as they might give the criminals justice. I think here her character lacks the role of a mother & more of revenge-seeking officer.
Lastly, Ganesh Kumar & Anjali Nair were good in their role. Ansiba as Anju also did a good part of a threaten-driven young woman. The scene where she gets fit while forcefully questioned by Geetha was very realistic & believable. Meena as Rani was always yapping and worrying without actually supporting her husband.
Verdict
A must-watch thriller from the South-Indian industry. If you have watched & loved Drishyam (2013) then you must watch it on Amazon Prime. You will enjoy how this story manages to surprise the viewers after what it did previously. It makes you think that a writer Jeethu Joseph could have so many plans after what seemed to be a dead-end story in the prequel. And the best part about it, being a crime thriller is unlike in many films where the justice system is betrayed & the hero gets away, this movie said that ‘you have to live with guilt everyday’ & that’s where the movie is real.
